The Canarian Warren Hound is a lean, racy podenco with a long head, large erect ears, and a short red or yellow coat. The outline is that of a primitive rabbit hunter, built for volcanic rock and heat.

A lean rabbit hound who is quiet and clean indoors, needs little coat care, and wants safe room to course rather than a still indoor day.

The Canarian Warren Hound, or Podenco Canario, is a rabbit dog from the Canary Islands. It hunts by scent, sight, and hearing over lava and scrub. The UKC classes it as a Sighthound & Pariah.

Temperament

These dogs are typically alert, independent, and tied to their hunter. They can be reserved with strangers and have a strong prey drive. They need more running room than a typical house pet of the same size.

Training

Be patient and use a long line. A rabbit in motion will beat a weak recall.

Care and grooming

The short coat needs a weekly wipe. Check pads after work on volcanic rock.

The breed is generally hardy. As with other lean hunting dogs, keep them from becoming overweight and use care with anesthesia.
