The Cirneco dell Etna is a small-to-medium Sicilian warren hound with a short tan coat, large erect ears, and a lean, elegant outline. It is built to hunt rabbit on lava and scrub.

A small Sicilian sighthound who can live in an apartment; short coat, a modest voice, and a need for safe sprints rather than all-day sofa life.

The Cirneco dell Etna is a primitive rabbit dog from the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. It hunts by scent, sight, and hearing.

Height: Male: 18–20 inches; Female: 16½–18 inches
Weight: 17–26 pounds
Color: Tan or chestnut, with or without white on the chest, feet, and tail tip
Coat: Short and sleek, slightly longer on the body than on the head
Lifespan: 12–14 years

Temperament

These hounds are typically alert, independent, and tied to their hunter. They have a strong prey drive and need more running room than a typical house pet. They can be reserved with strangers.

Training

Be patient and use a long line. A rabbit in motion will beat a weak recall.

Care and grooming

The short coat needs a weekly wipe. They feel the cold.

The breed is generally hardy. As with other lean sighthound types, use care with anesthesia and keep them from becoming overweight.
