The Croatian Sheepdog is a medium, square herding dog with a curly or wavy black coat and erect or semi-erect ears. White is allowed only as small marks on the chest or toes.

A black herding dog for work and a yard; a curly coat of modest care, a sharp bark, and too much motor for a still apartment.

The Croatian Sheepdog, or Hrvatski Ovcar, is a herding breed from Slavonia in eastern Croatia. It was used to move sheep and cattle and to watch the farm. The UKC classes it as a Herding Dog.

Temperament

These shepherds are typically sharp, loyal, and tied to their handler. They can be reserved with strangers and may try to herd children or other pets. They need a job.

Training

They learn quickly and get bored with repetition. Start herding or obedience work early.

Care and grooming

Brush the curly coat weekly so it does not mat. A daily outing matters more than fancy trimming.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Hip dysplasia can occur; keep the dog lean.
