The Fila Brasileiro is a huge, loose-skinned molosser with a large head, dropped ears, and a thick short coat. The body is rectangular, and the gait has a distinctive camel-like pace at the trot.

A large Brazilian tracking guardian for experienced handlers and a fenced property; short coat, a serious presence, not a first apartment dog.

The Fila Brasileiro is a Brazilian tracking and cattle-guarding mastiff, used on the fazenda to hold game and discourage strangers. It is a serious working guardian, not a casual family mastiff. It is banned or restricted in some countries.

Temperament

This breed is typically devoted to its own household and naturally distrustful of strangers. That distrust was selected on purpose. It is not a dog for a first-time owner, a busy sidewalk, or a home with many visitors.

Training

Socialize early, but do not expect a Golden Retriever. Keep the rules clear and the dog under control. Strength without training is dangerous.

Care and grooming

Wipe the short coat weekly. Grow this giant slowly and keep adults lean.

Shedding

Low to moderate.

Health

Filas may develop hip dysplasia, gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat), and elbow problems. Do not exercise hard right after meals.
