The Kai Ken is a medium, athletic Japanese spitz with erect ears, a curled tail, and a brindle coat that darkens with age. The outline is that of a mountain hunting dog, compact and agile.

A medium Japanese hunting spitz for a house and cool climate; a brindle coat that sheds, a reserved bark, and a mind that wants woods work more than idle indoor life.

The Kai Ken, or Tora Inu (tiger dog), is a hunting breed from the mountains of Yamanashi Prefecture in Japan. It was used on boar and deer. The AKC lists the breed in FSS; the UKC classes it as a Northern Breed.

Color: Black brindle, red brindle, or brindle; the striping may be faint in puppies

Temperament

Kai Ken are typically loyal to their household, reserved with strangers, and agile in rough country. They can be wary and need early socialization. They are not a busy-street companion breed.

Training

Be patient and consistent. They learn hunting work readily and do not enjoy harsh handling.

Care and grooming

Brush weekly, more often when the undercoat blows.

Shedding

Seasonal and moderate to heavy.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Hip dysplasia can occur; keep the dog lean.
