The Sporting Lucas Terrier is a small, low-set working terrier with a harsh or broken coat, a rectangular head, and a docked or natural tail. The outline is longer than a Jack Russell and less exaggerated than a Sealyham.

A small working terrier who can share a house if given a job; a short-to-broken coat and a ready voice at vermin and the door.

The Sporting Lucas Terrier was created in England by Sir Jocelyn Lucas from Sealyham and Norfolk-type terriers to produce a working earth dog that could still go to ground. The UKC classes it as a Terrier.

Temperament

These terriers are typically game, friendly with their household, and busy. They will hunt vermin if given the chance and need more work than a quiet toy.

Training

Be consistent and keep sessions short. Socialize them with other dogs while they are young.

Brush the harsh coat weekly and strip or trim it a few times a year.

The breed is generally hardy. Keep this long-backed terrier lean and limit jumping off furniture.
